Coffee Cultivation and Reforestation
Sustainable Coffee Cultivation and Reforestation Projects in Yemen for long-term employment creation
Coffee in Yemen and Reforestation Projects
Project: Sustainable coffee cultivation and reforestation
for long-term employment creation
Approach: Development
Donor: BMZ
Partners: NAHR & ADO
Budget: 2,500,000 EUR
Beneficiaries: 41,200
Duration: 2024-2027
Since 2002, Vision Hope International e.V. has been committed to promoting sustainable agriculture. Mid-2024 marks the launch of a new project in al-Mahwit, Hajja, and Lahij, focusing on coffee cultivation in Yemen and reforestation. Supported by BMZ and in collaboration with NAHR, the reforestation project employs the “Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration” (FMNR) method. By combining traditional knowledge and scientific know-how, we promote long-term independent and sustainable business for the Yemeni civilian population.
Creating long-term jobs with sustainable agriculture and coffee in Yemen
For the past 20 years, we have been working closely with coffee farmers in Yemen. Previously, our efforts centered on rainwater harvesting for irrigation, improved cultivation techniques, and regional nurseries. This new project broadens the scope to the entire value chain in partnership with various coffee roasteries in Germany: The aim is to be able to sell the coffee at home and abroad. This creates long-term livelihoods and jobs for local people, which in turn will strengthen the Yemeni economy.
Yemen can look back on a rich coffee tradition. This project aims to help local people to complement their traditional knowledge of the Yemeni coffee bean, which has been passed down through generations, with modern scientific know-how. In this way, we are creating a unique link between tradition and innovation that not only brings the coffee bean to life, but also the economic situation of the civilian population.
Sustainable Agriculture and Biodiversity
In addition to improving farmers’ incomes, the project also aims to enhance biodiversity. The ongoing crisis in Yemen has led to increased deforestation as rising gas prices make it unaffordable. Consequently, firewood has become a cheaper alternative, although traditionally, tree pruning rather than felling was practiced in Yemen.
Our project leverages the “Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration” (FMNR) method, which utilizes existing roots and seedlings. This approach stabilizes the soil, retains water, and enhances soil quality, enabling agroforestry. FMNR thus significantly contributes to sustainable agriculture in Yemen.
FMNR and Reforestation Projects in Yemen
FMNR, developed by Tony Rinaudo in Niger and popularized by Volker Schlöndorff’s documentary “The Forest Maker”, was introduced in a workshop in Sana’a at the end of 2022 and received considerable interest from Yemeni aid organizations. Particularly, the positive impacts on honey production were highlighted.
With this project, we are taking initial steps to implement FMNR in al-Mahwit, Hajja, and Lahij. Reforestation is a long-term endeavor, but FMNR can yield noticeable results within a few years. Reforestation projects and sustainable agriculture are vital for us to ensure long-term ecological and economic stability in Yemen.
