Maternal and child nutrition projects: Combatting Yemen malnutrition

Yemen malnutrition: A growing humanitarian crisis

The ongoing crisis in Yemen has had a devastating impact on health services, especially those needed to protect the nutrition and wellbeing of mothers and children. Malnutrition remains one of the country’s most urgent humanitarian challenges. Through our nutrition projects, we aim to combat Yemen malnutrition and give children and mothers the opportunity to live healthier, more secure lives.

The scale of malnutrition in Yemen

  • Over 600,000 children under five suffering from acute malnutrition

  • More than 200,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women affected

  • Malnutrition is a leading cause of child mortality in Yemen

How Vision Hope addresses Yemen malnutrition

  • Comprehensive supplementary feeding program: Large-scale distribution of supplementary food for mothers and children
  • Targeted treatment: Medical treatment and targeted nutrition support for acutely malnourished children and mothers
  • Training for mothers: Training programs and practical tips for mothers on child nutrition and preventive healthcare
  • Support for Clinics: Supporting local health facilities so they can provide primary healthcare to mothers and children

Success Story

In Bani Saad, Al-Mahweet, Yemen, six-year-old Mohammed was growing thinner by the day. Food was scarce, and like many families affected by malnutrition in Yemen, his parents feared for his life. “He wouldn’t eat,” his mother said, heartbroken.

Hope arrived when Vision Hope International launched its nutrition project in the region. Mohammed received specialized nutritional support and regular checkups, while his mother learned through health and nutrition training how to care for her children in the midst of these difficult circumstances.

Day by day, Mohammed’s strength returned. His smile came back, and with it, his mother’s hope: “I was so scared”, she said, “I feared for his life. Now, I have hope again. I know how to care for my children, and the future for once feels brighter.
